Elden Ring Lands Between is home to a host of strange and dangerous creatures, but nothing can prepare players for the enormous hippos in the kingdom of shadows. These colossal beasts are typically found near small bodies of water, and killing them yields the coveted Scadutree Shards.
Scadutree Shards are crucial expansion items that improve your character’s strength. There are a total of 50 Scadutree Shards to find in The shadow of the Erdtree, and six of them are dropped by these huge hippos. There is four standard hippos and a Golden Hippopotamus main boss in the expansionand here are their corresponding locations.

Standard hippopotamus in the hidden tomb of Charo
You can find a hippopotamus west of Charo’s Hidden Tomb of Grace. You can find the hippo patrolling the body of water and luckily there are no other enemies nearby, allowing you to safely focus on the beast. Defeating this hippopotamus drops a fragment of Scadutree.
You can reach Charo’s Hidden Tomb by first advancing through the Dragon Well and defeating the Ancient Dragon Man. Leaving the Dragon Pit, you will have to travel south of Jagged Peak to discover the Great Altar of the Communion of the Dragonand ride west across the fallen colossal dragon to reach Charo’s hidden tomb.
Golden Hippo Boss in Shadow Keep
There is only one golden hippo in The shadow of the Erdtree, and is the first enemy to guard your entrance to Shadow Keep. Unlike standard hippo variants, the Golden Hippo is larger and possesses Crucible powers. Defeating the golden hippo will reward you with two fragments of Scadutree and the
Crucible Aspect: Thorns

To reach Shadow Keep, you must clear Ensis Castle or discover a spiritual spring jump that will take you to Scadu Altus. Start your journey from the Highway Cross Site of Grace and head north until you reach the main entrance to Shadow Keep. Ride the elevator to discover the Shadow Keep’s main gate grace site and break through the wall of mist to challenge the beast.

The Land of Shadows is incredibly vast and varied, but these new areas are the ones that stand out the most in Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
Two standard hippos near the Recluses river
You can find two standard hippos closer to the Site of Gracia downstream of the Recluses River. Both hippos can be found patrolling the large body of water at the base of the waterfall. Defeating both hippos will reward you with a Scadutree fragment each.
To find the two hippos, you must progress through the Shadow Keep and discover the hidden staircase that takes you to the Castle Watering Hole Site of Grace. From there, travel south along the river until you discover the Sitio de Gracia downstream of the Recluses River and then carefully make your way down to the bottom of the waterfall using the tombstones protruding from the hill. Once you’re at the bottom, Travel southeast to find the two hippos patrolling the body of water. You can sneak up on one of the hippos to spot it and avoid fighting both at the same time.
Standard hippopotamus at the ancient ruins of Rauh
The last hippopotamus can be found northwest of the Grace Site of the Minor Viaduct Tower in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh. The hippopotamus can be found near a small body of water and, when defeated, drops a fragment of Scadutree.
You can reach the Viaduct Minor Tower’s Siege of Grace by advancing through the Shadow Keep and Discovering the West Rampart Grace Site. Travel west from Grace and cross the long bridge to find the elevator that takes you to the Grace site of the Minor Viaduct Tower. Reaching the Ancient Ruins of Rauh does not require defeat
but it is a mandatory boss that must be defeated to advance the story.
