While Split door 2 is introducing several new features and mechanics, 1047 Games remains committed to preserving the feel of the classic shooter in the sequel. Recently, Game Rant spoke with Ian Proulx, creative director of split door and CEO of 1047, who shared information about the game’s development process, how they are building on the first game, and details about upcoming features. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Q: What new mechanic or feature from the sequel is your favorite?
Proulx: Personally, I’m very happy with the squat slide! When I play the original again split doorIt definitely feels bad. My team and I carefully analyzed the squat slide in games like Apex Legends to really flesh out our version.
Q: With your studio focused on creating your dream game, backed by a considerable team and resources, have there been any standout moments of triumph or disappointment during development?
Proulx: I think it was a great moment to participate in the weekly playtests at the studio. While the design team does them daily, not everyone else does. After each playtest, we conduct surveys with questions like “Did you have fun?” or “Did you want to continue playing?” Our ultimate goal was to create a game that was undeniably better than the first. At first, without animations or sound, it was difficult to measure our progress. Last November, we had a pivotal moment when the team unanimously agreed: “Yes, we have passed the first split door. “This is all.”
Q: In the previous conference today, you mentioned that the team discussed what elements to preserve and strive to achieve in Split door 2. Were there guidelines set for things you specifically wanted to avoid, other than EMP grenades?
Proulx: Hmm, not particularly. At the end of the day, we wanted every button press to be fun. For example, when a player reloads, he might see a cool spin or a satisfying visual effect when inserting a magazine. On the other hand, we found that EMP grenades were no fun. Throwing a grenade at a wall only to have the enemy open a new portal a few seconds later didn’t seem like a great use of a player’s time.
Splitgate 2 prepares to expand the story behind its characters
Q: How does 1047 Games plan to integrate the story into the sequel? Will it extend to other media such as cinematics, comics or in-game vignettes?
Proulx: While we have no plans for in-game vignettes, we are already releasing cinematic trailers alongside the comics. These can be read in the Split door 2 Companion app, available for free on iOS and Android. The app also includes quizzes and collectible cards that unlock in-game rewards for Split door 2. We are planning to publish more issues of comics, quizzes and cards regularly.
If we find that fans are really excited about the story, we’ll be happy to dedicate more resources to expanding it. However, if we find out that our community only wants to run and shoot other players, we will scale back. Either way, it will be continually worked on.
Q: Can you share any details about the story now or will we have to wait until closer to the game’s release?
Proulx: I probably shouldn’t say too much now as it might be a spoiler. I will say that in many video games characters die and reappear without any explanation. This concept will be explored in a future cinematic, but I can’t give any details at the moment.
Splitgate 2 aims to improve, not replace, the original
Q: What are your expectations for how the meta will play out in Season 1? Do you think any composition or factions stand out as clearly more dominant than the rest?
Proulx: I expect no faction to be overwhelmingly dominant, but that may still happen. Strategy will be crucial, especially since players cannot switch factions until the end of a round. While you can adjust your loadout after each kill, the choice between Eros, Meridian, or Sabrask is fixed until the next round.
This means you can strategize based on the previous round, such as deciding: “The enemy team was all Sabrask last round. What if we all go to Eros this time?” Of course, when professional players tested the game, they indicated that it is best to have at least one of each faction on the team.
Q: Will the rating system be implemented? Split door 2 Will it be undergoing any changes or reworking?
Proulx: We haven’t really started talking about qualifiers yet, but we’ll be innovating in small ways. We would like to keep what was working in the game.
Q: Since Split door 2 It follows its predecessor as a free-to-play game, are there strategies to address these issues?
Proulx: In fact, we purchased our own anti-cheat software, called EQU8, which works solely for our game. Cheating is something we take very seriously. I won’t pretend to know much about anti-cheat, but I do know that our anti-cheat department has done everything possible to prevent it and ensure that it doesn’t hinder the overall performance of the game. That’s not to say that cheating doesn’t exist in the game, as it is inevitable, but we are committed to making our game as fair as possible.
Q: For fans who enjoyed the Arena aspects of the original. split doorHow do you maintain those elements while also introducing a new perspective to the game?
Proulx: Our game is still heavily based on weapons and mechanics, rather than skills. I would call it more valorant that supervision. While the game is strategic and high intensity, the skills will not be overwhelming. Our goal was to improve the first split doordon’t redefine it.
