Beyond the party to show the effects of Shinra in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Cosmo Canyon’s Voiceless Challenger
At Cosmo Canyon’s Syldra Inn, a man named Robin challenges Cloud to a Queen’s Blood match. He gestures to greet and Cloud quickly recognizes his hand movements as SSL, Shinra Sign Language. Cloud comments that he learned the basics through Shinra’s hand signs, and the two participate in a friendly match. After the defeat, Cloud asks the man if he is also an ex-military man; Yes, he answers. Upon losing his voice in the war, Robin points out that he doesn’t need a voice to duel, not when he has SSL.
The interaction with Robin is one of the most endearing ways in which the effects of Shinra are demonstrated, showing a man who, despite being disabled, is able to adapt and enjoy the simplicity of playing cards, encouraging others to learn SSL along the way. The hope of moving forward in the face of tragic circumstances is also seen through other interactions with NPCs; Rocco, a boy with a Queen’s Blood sage for a dog, tells Cloud that his stardom will finally get them out of North Corel and into better places.
The trauma of the world of rebirth
The strength to keep going in the face of adversity is a theme woven into many of RenaissanceThe characters, though, do not underestimate the losses and pain that led to their circumstances. In Gongaga, a flower-filled monument commemorates those who died in the reactor; In Cosmo Canyon, lanterns illuminate the sky to mourn those who have returned to the stream of life. There are glimpses of people who have suffered too much to move on, like Dyne, whose tragedy is interspersed with pure anger. As Shinra continues his destructive path, Renaissance focuses on the people of his world and the many ways in which the company’s effects have metastasized, oscillating between hope and despair.
In Zack’s timeline, this tragedy hits especially hard through one line, spoken by Elmyra. When a crack opens in the sky and everything seems doomed, Marlene mourns the absence of Tifa and Barret. Elmyra responds that they are all headed to the same place and that she will see them again soon, a feeling both comforting and unsettling at the end of the world. It is through these forms that Renaissance shows the detriment of Shinra’s actions and the emotions evoked by the tragedies they have inflicted. The beauty and resilience of the planet and humanity are tested through the stirring of Shinra’s wrath and the many reactions of RenaissanceThe NPCs show how nuanced their characters are.
