He sacrificed himself to protect Luffy.
Portgas D. Ace was the commander of the Second Division of the Whitebeard Pirates. He was happy with his role, but things changed when Blackbeard, a member of his division, murdered Thatch. Ace was tasked with finding and punishing Blackbeard. When he came face to face with the deserter, Ace was ready to unleash hell on him.
However, Blackbeard proved too powerful for Ace. In the end, Ace ended up in Impel Down and, after a while, he was transferred to Marineford. Ace had accepted his fate, but that didn’t stop Luffy from freeing his older brother. After fighting for so long, Luffy stopped, giving Akainu the chance to finish him off. Bon clay
Gave up his freedom twice for Luffy
Bon Clay was introduced as a villain who worked for Crocodile’s Baroque Works. But he changed his mind after Crocodile was captured. Bon Clay was the first to help the Straw Hats escape from Hina and the Marines. Later, in Impel Down, Bon Clay stayed behind to allow Luffy and the other escapees to reach Marineford.
They were both acts of selflessness, and the best thing is that he didn’t have to go that far for Luffy. But he did it anyway because he considered him a close friend. It’s safe to say that without Bon Clay, the Straw Hat Pirates’ journey would have come to a premature end.
